The High Atlas Foundation (HAF) along with other local cooperatives such as Mogador Cooperative and Mejji Association continue promoting economic growth and sustainable agricultural development in Morocco, with the support of volunteers such as Bill Nichol.

[1] Bill served as a volunteer to the High Atlas Foundation (HAF) for two weeks in January 2020. His primary duty was technical, rather than agricultural. Bill’s mission was to help the farmers of tree nurseries in Morocco to enhance their tree planting project, which was financed by Ecosia, a German organization that finances reforestation around the world. The project, which is implemented by HAF, aims at planting 150.000 seeds of almond, carob, olive, and walnut trees at the nurseries of the High Atlas region. Farmers needed help on how to manage the finances of their planting project.

[2] Bill’s volunteering period in the High Atlas region was at the right time as it was during the planting season in the area. Farmers wanted to know the expected financial gains from their tree plantings. One benefit of Bill’s visit to the farmers is that he shared with them his financial and business skills. The trainings he organized helped the farmers share their specialized skills with each other. Similarly, Bill offered guidance to the farmers about how to maximize their financial gains from the nurseries.

[3] During his work in Morocco, Bill spent another two weeks in Essaouira helping two other cooperatives: Mogador and Mejji. With his support, they developed a strategy to boost their web presence. The strategy aims to improve these cooperatives’ online stores. This will allow them to sell more of their Argan products on the internet, which will increase their income. Bill and another local volunteer, Anass, also contributed to building the skills of the technical staff who will update and maintain the websites for the two cooperatives.

[4] Anass visited the cooperatives and collected information about their products. He asked the members about how they want to show their products online, who will buy the products, and the prices they are considering. This information helped Anass design the online platform better. He suggested to the associations to include their food certificates in the product packages. This will improve their product’s value and increase its price and sales.

Spending time offline away from phones and screens has many benefits. First, it improves our health because we sleep better and our eyes rest. Second, we can spend more time with our family and friends and talk face to face. In addition, we have more time to read, do sports or learn new skills. Finally, being offline reduces stress and helps us concentrate on our studies.

Task 2: Write a reply to Jannah’s email. (6 pts)

Dear friend,

Thank you for your email. Starting a YouTube channel is a great idea, and I am happy to help.

First, I think you should talk about topics that teenagers care about, such as studies, sports, video games and music. Second, you could share useful tips, for example how to revise for exams or how to manage time. Moreover, I suggest you make funny videos about daily life at school, because teenagers like to laugh. Finally, remember to be honest and to avoid sharing private information.

I hope these ideas help. Good luck!
