[1] Thijs Slegers is a Dutch journalist who went from a successful career as a football journalist at Voetbal International magazine to become the spokesperson of PSV Eindhoven football club in 2015. Before his death, Slegers managed to unite around 40,000 donors around one cause: helping people who need blood and stem cell.
[2] At the end of 2020, Slegers was diagnosed with severe leukemia, or blood cancer, and had to adapt his responsibilities at the club to undergo medical treatment. After two years of treatment, on 2 February 2023, Slegers announced in a public statement that his disease was incurable. “The doctors can do nothing more for me,” he said on a social media platform.
[3] Despite sharing this sad news with the world, Slegers did not lose his sense of humor, asking fans for recommendations of TV series to watch. He also didn’t forget to think of other people who are suffering from leukemia. Slegers made a special request at the end of his media announcement: “If you really want to make me happy, register as a blood or cell donor. I can’t receive any more help, but other cancer patients can! This will make me really satisfied.”
[4] The reaction of clubs, journalists, fans and the entire football world was one of total support and solidarity with Slegers, but he never imagined what would happen with his request. In less than one day, Matchis Foundation, which administers blood and cell donations in the Netherlands, received around 400 new donors who responded to Slegers’ request. A week later, registrations went up to 5000.
[5] In the meantime, PSVs sponsors decided to give up all their advertising space in the stadium during the match between PSV and Groningen to send messages of support and help in Slegers’ appeal for more blood and cell donors. In addition, the match paused in the 12th minute to celebrate and thank Slegers with applause, cellphone lights and banners.
[6] “I am very happy about this. It’s very special that people come together to do something like this. think it’s a wonderful example of the power of football,” said Slegers. “We are living in uncertain times filled with conflicts. The power of football brings people together to cross borders, unite and celebrate together,” added Slegers.

Writing
Task 1: Complete the paragraph. (4 pts)
I help my parents at home in different ways. First, I tidy my room and help my mother prepare meals. Second, I wash the dishes after dinner and take out the rubbish. In addition, I go shopping with my father at the weekend and carry the bags. Finally, I help my younger brother with his homework. I like helping them because it makes our home a happy place.
Task 2: Write a reply to the parents. (6 pts)
Dear parents,
Thank you for your email. Many teenagers have the same problem, so please do not worry.
First, I suggest that you set a fixed timetable: Amine should do his homework before playing games or watching TV. Second, you should limit the time he spends on screens, for example one hour a day. Moreover, you could prepare a quiet place for him to study and sit with him at the beginning. Finally, talk to him kindly and praise him when he works hard.
If the problem continues, please come to see me at school.
Best regards,
The school advisor
